Not So Smart Excuses
There's a Death in the Family: Don't ever use this excuse if it's not true. Your employer will lose all trust in you. I had an employee whose father died -- twice.
I Have a Personal Emergency: This one is so vague that it rarely works. It could mean anything from fatigue to an appointment to play golf, and your boss knows it. It has a 50% success rate, which means it could or could not work. Very risky.
Sleepy: Some employees will use this excuse, and I know I have been tempted to use it, but common sense prevailed. Typically your boss is tired too and would like the day off. You can probably get by using this once, so I would not use this one unless you really can sell yourself.
